Story #7 Big White Umbrella ...sorry..it's not a Christmas story as I promissed...my mood didn't celebrate...next year..promiss..
What kind of job is it! “- a young suited man was thinking, holding a big old fashioned white umbrella opened against a heavy rain- that rare in Los Angeles. There were these ten or so rainy days when people get stunned that thing as a rain, wind, storm and grey sky exist. Every one Californian person was surprised that it could be less than eighty degrees by Fahrenheit around and was shocked that the roads could be slippery. Is was bizarre: Californians had been living with a thought that a city of Angels is a hurricane’s and earthquake’s place, they have had more food and water home just in case…But every usual rain made them feel forgotten by God.
A young man was walking by the chain of shops in a big mall under the rainy sky and his duty was to kindly walk mall’s customers from the parking lot to the shops and back if they wanted to-the unusual weather made managers to improve the service and a few young men were in charge for the purpose. And no one knew that this particular man was a thinker – it was his unhappy quality which make his life as much interesting as complicated. He was thinking about the city of angels- it’s beauty and dark sides- and was feeling busy whole day with the thoughts- it didn’t make him useless in the work, just the opposite! He truly felt involved in a people’s lives while having conversations with them, walking them through the paths, passing by the golden man’s statue, short street lights with a fresh flowers in a hanged baskets, kiosks with a shiny cheap jewelry, balconies on the Barns and Nobel ‘s building decorated with a figure of Santa Claus and a Christmas tree… The controversial logic of the city’s occupants made him be curious and understanding why that many psychologists were keeping their jobs: a young man wasn’t born in LA. But still…
“Pardon me! May I help you!”, he saw an arguing couple getting wet at the rain. “How are you today?”, he smiled at them. They turned toward him puzzled and visibly surprised – their faces were red and angry…the expression of man’s face told him that he was losing the fight.
“What is it about?”-woman asked-“What do you want?” She was rude. Why pretty women are usually rude?- white umbrella asked himself; isn’t it ridiculous… they have to be more happy than the ugly women but they were not…
“This is a new service, madam. My job is to help you feel better in this rain.”- “white umbrella” man smiled openly, trying to find a way to get out of the unpleasant situation unharmed.
“Who cares! We are not made from sugar, I love rain.” A woman even haven’t feel uncomfortable to make a battle for nothing with an unknown man-she stopped at the middle of the pedestrian path made men stop also, so – one of them was trapped by his destiny and another- by his responsibility to his job.
“Honey, we have to go home, not to the mall…My mom have to leave our home in light time-she can’t drive in dark. And a baby…we haven’t call for hours…if it’s some problem there…”- a husband obviously was a weak and responsible part of a couple.
“You are such a jerk! My mom..my mom…what about me! I stay home with a baby twenty four seven…I need some rest and we weren’t out for a long time- you never here for me!” she was almost screaming.
“I work ….I have two jobs for you not to work and look after our baby….honey…please, let a gentleman go…we made him feel bad… .”
“Not at all…not at all…” two young men were trying to escape from the situation with dignity. But it wasn’t a woman who would allowed them to do this.
“No, he will stay with us..it’s his job…let everyone know what kind of husband I do have!”
“Ok, I am a bad husband. Just let him go…”
Luckily, there is a group of kids was passing by – a great excuse to get away from two unhappy lonely people at the middle of a rainy mall.
“Hey, how are you doing? Holidays are coming, guys! Let me protect you from a wet, cold weather…”
“Wow!…what a huge umbrella!...is this your job?...I would love to have this job!...I want to buy umbrella like yours for my mom- it will be big enough for my mom, three sisters and me… ha-ha-ha…I am serious!…Where I can buy it? Here, in a mall? …Can you jump with it as with a parachute? …” The kids were such a relieve …such a pleasant company- kind and laughing. They haven’t allowed each other to talk, but it wasn’t fight..it was an excitement of been young, healthy, and full of hope.
What the young man loved about LA was a diversity: various of body shapes, skin and eyes colors, and missing any kind of direction in clothing-everyone was his own designer. It was fun to watch people very close – when someone is under your umbrella you are really close to a person. So, he make his own statistics about people’s background ….His next customers were a mom with a boy, whose chocolate skin was contrasting his bright blue eyes- what a mix in his blood creates that amazing combination! When a boy asked him something- a young man even couldn’t understand a question looking in a boys eyes as he was sent by UFO and the eyes were a tool for providing a signal…”White umbrella” man was talking to a boy, walking him and a mom to a parking, pretending that nothing special happen, but what an adventure developed in his exited brain!…The story of a boy in a twenty first century as a fruit of a tree planted many years ago by Spanish conquistadors (light chocolate skin), Irish farmers (blue eyes), some African musician(long tiny fingers), and probably some other blood and culture who made this boy as a final unusual and beautiful completion. A story started probably in a sixteenth century…in an Indian tribe..let it be in Lake Ontario area…
“Bye! Have a nice day!”- tiny, blue eyed figure disappeared jumping in a transparent full of people elevator…”Bye!”, young man answered and continue the story…
….Some olive skinned Spanish or Portuguese sailors were thrown on the Atlantic’s ocean coast..hungry and disoriented, fighting with the aborigines tribes on their way, armed only with the hand made wooden swords and heavy arrows, the group of brave men crossed Appalachian…They reach a huge lakes which Indians called Great Lakes. They have had many adventures …and also they were accepted in the tribe…where the love blossomed between some of them and the Indian women..Made a families, some of them decided to move to another place, to the south..where the weather wasn’t that bleak toward people. So, they moved forward to the south..crossed river Arkansas and found a little town in a bottom of Rocky Mountains. Their children, as it appropriate to a smart, looking forward to the adventure and a new land young people, went further, made families with another race…and so on. “White umbrella” young man was staying under the heavy rain dreaming about something what really could happen…he was thinking about the life- how creative it is very often, but if we see the story from the real life in the movie – we wont believe it…
A little blue eyed boy didn’t even suspect how interesting the history of his ancestors was and if he knew- his life would be turned up side down…
Imagination …how powerful it is… to whoever own it…
